Golden Mustache Diseases and Problems

Like all living things, your Golden Mustache plants may face certain issues. I have listed the solutions for some of the ones that I am experienced with.

Diseases/Pests

My family has grown Golden Mustache plants for over 5 years, and we have never encountered a disease. In fact, one of my golden mustache plants has been in the prescence of two mildew-infested tomato plants, and it has not caught the disease. However, depending on the soil used, you may encounter mushrooms and mold growing in your soil. Make sure to remove these pests immediately, as they have the power to do great damage to your plants.

Red "Burns"

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Sun scorch is caused by overexposure to sunlight, especially if the plants have not been hardened off to (gradually exposed to) strong sunlight.

Yellow/Gray Spots

I have no idea what causes this problem. It is characterized by gray, brown, and yellow spots that are more transparent than opaque. Our theory is that it is due to sudden over-watering, but please take this theory with a grain of salt.

Yellowing leaves

The yellowing of leaves usually occurs near the bottom-most leaves of Golden Mustache plants and runners. These leaves start out healthy, and then slowly turn lime-green, then yellow, and then finally dry out. They are a bit less of a mystery than the former problem, as they seem to happen more often when I have under-watered the plants (or, when we go on vacation). This problem is further caused by the fact that the stem of these plants cannot widen after it has grown, meaning that a small stem cannot support all of a plant's new growth.

Runner rot

Unfortunately, I cannot explain this one either. Quite often, the runners of Golden Mustache plants may begin to wilt, which forces the plant to grow a side-branch out of the original runner. My guess to why this happens is also a shortage of water, which stops the plant from being able to grow its runners.

Sun scorch on the tip of a leaf.

The unexplained brown spot condition.

Some lime-green and yellowing leaves. If they are left on the plants, they will dry out within a week.

The end of a runner which has wilted and rotted.
