Starting From Runners (or Heads)

One of the easiest ways to start Golden Mustache plants is to plant its runners. If your runners do not have roots yet, I recommend following these instructions. This method will work both outdoors and indoors, but I recommend growing them indoors in containers (especially if you live in a temperate part of the world).

1: (only if the runner has no heads or roots!) Place the runner sections into buckets of regular water, to start the growth of their roots and heads (img. at right). Make sure that they do not recieve direct sunlight. Within a week or two, the runners will begin to develop heads.

2: (only if the heads have no roots!) Cut the heads off of the runners and place them in a dish of water. They will quickly grow roots.

3: Once/if the heads have some roots, you can plant them in a container. Depending on the size of the head, you may want to use a small-medium container to start. Plant the head about 2cm below the leaves (diagram below). The plants will grow best in organic, well draining potting mix.

Make sure that the container has holes in the bottom and a tray to collect water!

4: Congrats! You have planted a golden mustache runner! For information about continuing to grow the plant, please go to "Specific Topics."

The start of a new plant, also known as a "head". They form either at the end of runners, or if the runner is cut, will grow off of the sides of runner segments.

Step 2. The heads of the runners will grow new roots, even in water!
